Landscape is....An Object

This was the first project of the year. For this project I had to find an object from any of the London markets. The object could be anything, from a football to a paper-clip, a beer can to a Romanesque.
I found my object at Kingston Market, a purple pepper.

I started to explore the object and looking at the qualities of the pepper. To make it more interesting I looked at Rachel Whiteread's work. For example The House that she filled with concrete and took the exterior walls out. To see more about the house click here.
I started to look at the negative space inside and around the pepper. To do this I poured wax into the pepper, then cut the pepper away which left me with a cast of the inside of a pepper. Below is a picture of the wax still in one piece with the wax set.

The pepper decayed within about a week so I took the wax out of the pepper and started to look at the wax and how different lighting changed the appearance of the wax casts. Below are some pictures that show some different lighting.

I also changed the material of the pepper and made a solid mould of a pepper from Plaster, to see how the characteristics of the pepper changed. To help with some of my drawings I drew contours lines on the pepper, which gave the pepper more character because the ink from the pen didn't dry and changed the colour of the cast. Below are is a picture of the cast.

Landscape is....Context

For the final part of the project, i was set the task of taking the pepper out of context of the market and being a vegetable. With the Wax and plaster casts i turned it into a mountain range. Below is a loop starting with a pepper taking you through the different models that changed the characteristics of the pepper.

Below are some pictures of my final piece, showing what was a pepper as a mountain range.

Landscape is....Site Investigation Micro Scales

For project 2, we were split into groups and set the task of finding a 10m x 1m strip of land anywhere on the Knights Park Campus. The piece of land that my group and I found was behind the Stanley Picker Gallery and included part of the sculpture you can see in the pictures below.

Once every group had found a strip of land, we then had to decide how to represent the strip using a variety of different scales. In the loop below you can see the different types of media we used to represent the strip.

I was set the task of recording the level changes along the boundary lines of the strip.

From this work you can see the level changes in along the boundary line. Each section is 1m long and the measurements were taken every 20cm. Above the Q and R section is where the sculpture is on our strip. Below the I, J and K section is where our section dropped into the river.

Landscape is....Site Investigation Macro Scales

For this part of the project, we were continuing with the site investigation, but on a larger scale, taking into account the surrounding area, whether its above or below the ground.

On our site there was a man hole, so as a group we decided to look into the drainage of the area and where the pipes under the man hole could take you. Also part of the river was on our site, so we looked into where the river starts and ends, looking at the different areas along the river route. Below is a floor plan of the Stanley Picker Gallery with the drainage marked on.

Below is the drainage system of the surrounding area, the red shows the foul water system and the blue shows the surface water drainage system. Our site is marked in yellow, the river is marked on the map as well.

Landscape is....Site Comparisons

For this part of the project, we had 2 sites. The 10m x 1m strip in on the campus in Kingston, and the chosen site in London, the first pier under Waterloo Bridge next to the Festival Pier.
For the Comparison, we looked at each site and looked the qualities of each site and they looked to see how they compared, and where there are similarities.

The photos below are some images of each area, showing the different uses of the surrounding area. The London site was a lot more public in terms of the amount of people walking next to the site, but like the Kingston site the underside of the bridge didn't really seem to distract people as they walked past. This is a similar situation at the Kingston site, a lot of people were walking past the site and sculpture but not really taking time to look at it.

Landscape is....A meeting of 2 people

For this part of the project I had to design something with that brings 2 people together. To do this my chosen site was under Waterloo Bridge on the first pier.

On the pier there is going to be a see-saw,

with a small bridge leading from the South Bank to the pier.

In order to bring the 2 people to the see-saw at different points on the South Bank there is going to be a trail of footprints for people to follow, and it will bring them together to use the see-saw.

Landscape is....A meeting for 1000 people

For this part of the project, we had to design something for a meeting of up to a 1000 people. For this, on my site in London (the beach next to Festival Pier) there is a social meeting called Reclaim the Beach. Instead of designing something to attract people there I designed something for the people that go there for the party. With this in mind I thought a ship wreck on the beach would give the users a platform to stand on and still fit in with the beach, and be suitable for the party.

Landscape is....Hastings- Inspiration and Materials

The plan above is one of the first sketches that became the theme to my Ideas Centre in Hastings. From the road the viewer has a limited view of the site.
The theme of the limited view to the site was reversed and I designed the above floor plan for the library on the 1st floor of the Ideas Centre. The theme is carried on because the viewer has now got a limited view of certain parts of Hastings.
The film loop above shows the floor plans and 3 selected views from the 1st floor, there's more detail about the selected views in the 'Sections and Views' post.
This sheet is investigating all the materials in the local area.
This wood is from the local huts in Hastings, surrounding site A.

The loop below shows the materials for the Ideas Centre.

Landscape is....Hastings Ideas Centre- Sections and Views

Above is 3 sections from the Ideas Centre to each focal point, showing what you can see from the Ideas Centre to the focal point.
This is one of the focal points from view 1. Its a buoy out at sea that's connected to the ideas centre. Its connected by Morse code. The idea being that the users type in a message and it flashes up on the lights on the buoy.

The film loop above shows the section sheet.
This is a photo from the West Hill in Hastings, it shows the 3 different views and what you can see through each view.
This is a view from a certain point within the ideas centre. The idea behind the limited view comes from the limited view of the site from the road.

The film loop below shows a summary of the 3 views from the ideas centre.
